cannot sleep
my show opened last night to a packed house and i felt like i was on auto pilot. it wasn't my best, that's for sure. no, not my worst either.
i can't sleep. i've awake for hours listening to the traffic in the street outside my window. i think i heard a car crash a few hours back.
why am i doing this again with my life?
and now, i have to do two more shows today?
i want to cry. i'm so tired. i'm just so so tired.

G'day Kristina - Sorry about your wakefulness problem. At the risk of providing you with material for the next time you try stand-up comedy, here's what I do when I can't sleep after being wound up after teaching evening classes at TAFE (sort of = community college). This is especially after a class that's indifferent, as distinct from extremely good or extremely shithouse (= bad).
1. Sit up. Roll and move your neck about fo 30 seconds or so (but not so much that you get giddy, and not if you already feel pain in the neck), then lie flat. (A lot of stress tightens the neck.)
Slow breathing down a bit via some deep breaths (in via the nose, out via mouth).
Isolate each limb in your mind, one by one.
Start with, say, left arm. Tighten it up as hard as you possibly can for 10 seconds then let if flop and be relaxed for 30 seconds. Do this again.
Then the left fist. Again.
Then the left fingers. Scrunch each up one by one, then relax each one. Again.
Then the right arm. Same pattern as left arm.
Then right leg. Then right toes, etc. Same pattern as arms.
Then left leg. Then left toes, etc. Same pattern as right leg.
(The actual order of limbs doesn't matter BUT go in a "circle - eg R arm - L arm - l leg - R leg)
If you're still not sleepy, try it again. Also, you might then try this with abdominal muscles as you lie flat. (But don't try this after eating curries.) (Sorry.) (Also, don't try this if you're having problems with periods, or had surgery recently.)
2. If that doesn't work, get up and write a letter to a friend BUT use pen & paper; *DON'T GO NEAR THE COMPUTER* (it will wake you up more). In fact, do not go near the computer for any purpose, www or otherwise.
(Letter writing works for me, but I like writing letters to friends anyway. Also these letters send my friends to sleep, regardless of the time of day.)
Hope this helps!
PS: re previous post, I should have explained - its 4pm Monday here, and I'm doing normal work stuff - hence this suggestion (your post appeared in my Bloglines window). Cheers!
