Auntie Sewing Squad

At the start of the pandemic, my tour was cancelled and like many Americans, I was classified as a “non-essential” worker. I used the same skills I used to sew sets and props to make masks on my Hello Kitty sewing machine for essential workers. I started a Facebook Group to wave down help. Seventeen months, hundreds of volunteers across the country, and 350k masks plus many mutual aid relief vans later— we became the national mutual aid network that is the Auntie Sewing Squad. Our book came out Fall 2021 from University of California Press. It’s also the subject of my Pulitzer Prize Finalist show Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord.
